Baby Gerry arrived at Giraffe House on 15 December 2008. She was about 6 months old when she arrived and is still being bottle-fed. The public are welcome to view her feeding at 2pm and 2pm daily (this may vary according to her requirements). We are hoping that she will be joined by another giraffe soon but in the meantime she is truly enjoying the love and contact given her by our staff.
The giraffe is the tallest animal on earth. Adult bulls can reach 5.5m in height and become darker with age. Our boys are still young, and have some growing to do.
Almost exclusive browsers, they eat mainly leaves, fresh shoots, flowers, pods and fruits. Acacia trees are the most important food source. Branches are pulled into the mouth by a very long and dextrous tongue. They can even eat certain thorns.
Cows and young animals form herds of up to 12 animals, while young males form small bachelor groups. Mature bulls are solitary.
Lions are their main predators, but a giraffe can cripple or even kill a lion with a kick from its heavy hooves.
